Home water filter cartridges vary in several ways. One of their main points of difference is the size of the particles that they can effectively block. Cartridge capabilities are measured in microns; a three-micron filter, for instance, will block out any particle that is three microns in size or bigger. Thus, the smaller the micron number the more particles the cartridge will be able to block. Filter cartridges also vary in how water moves by or through them. A gravity filter is powered by gravity, as water flows down through it, whereas a water pressure filter needs, obviously, water pressure. A siphon filter, meanwhile, pulls water out of an “unpressurized” container. A filter cartridge might also be labeled according to what it’s made of, as in a carbon block filter or a ceramic filter.
And some filters have special capabilities reflected in their names. A C/T/O cartridge filter is one that reduces chlorine, taste, and odor, and a sediment filter is especially adept at getting rid of particles of sediment in water. Filter cartridges are also differentiated by their size; in fact, many merchants arrange and organize their selection of cartridges by their sizes. The most common filter cartridge size for home filters is 9.75 inches by 2.5 inches, although you don’t necessarily have to buy a cartridge that is exactly the same size as the cartridges that your water purification system originally came with. Also, actual sizes vary according to their brand; two filters with a diameter of four inches, say, aren’t necessarily the exact same size.
